Strange NL Place Names

Newfoundland and Labrador is know for its beautiful scenery and friendly people... it is also known for the strange place names.

Places such as Dildo, Conception Bay, Heart's Desire, Cow Head, Leading Tickles, Come by Chance, and Happy Valley, along with many others.

Lets take a look at these places...

• Dildo takes the number one spot and while the place name "Dildo" is attested in this area since at least 1711, its origin is unknown.

• Located on the Avalon Peninsula is Conception Bay. The area gets its name from the Portuguese, from the term Baía da Conceição.

• Heart's Desire is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The town had a population of 226 in the Canada 2006 Census.

• Cow Head is located on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, in Gros Morne National Park. It is a popular spot for tourists.

• Leading Tickles is located on the shores of Notre Dame Bay. In 2016, the town had a population of 292, down from 407 in the Canada 2006 Census.

• Come By Chance is a town on the Avalon Peninsula. Located in this town is Newfoundland's only oil refinery, the Come By Chance Refinery operated by North Atlantic Refining Company, which has a capacity of 115,000 barrels per day. According to the 2016 Statistics Canada Census it has a population of 228.

• Happy Valley, now known as Happy Valley-Goose Bay, is located in the central part of Labrador on the coast of Lake Melville and the Grand River, Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the largest population centre in that region.
