What Will Happen to Carbonear's Train?


The Town of Carbonear has a Canadian National Railway Locomotive 803 that is located on the railway tracks on the municipally designated Railway Heritage Site.

Over the past few year the locomotive has fallen into disrepair.

Restoration costs for this project will be high and there are many demands on tax dollars to provide needed services and complete repairs to essential aging infrastructure.

The Town of Carbonear are requesting expressions of interest for the locomotive including but not limited to suggestions and ideas for restoring the locomotive, repurposing the locomotive, other organizations outside the Town of Carbonear that may have an interest in the locomotive and any ideas that can be considered by Council before making a final decision on Locomotive 803. The Town welcomes any suggestions or improvements to consider based upon the submitting individual/organization expertise and experience.

Submissions shall include the following information:

  • 1.) A statement of interest and intent. The statement should be based upon and serve to demonstrate the submitters experience and subject knowledge;

  • 2.) The name, address, telephone number and email address of the person or organization making the submission;

  • 3.) Details on the proposal being made, including a general work plan for carrying out the submitted project;

  • 4.) Resources expected to be required to successfully complete the proposal (ie. Human resources, financial resources, etc.)

  • 5.) If the submitted proposal is for restoration of the Locomotive 803, please provide an outline for raising the necessary funds to complete the restoration project;

  • 6.) If the submitted proposal is for removal of the Locomotive 803, please include details on how the history of Locomotive 803 and its importance to the railway in Carbonear will be represented; Submission Deadline
