Today the Canadian flag turns 60. The Canadian flag was officially adopted on February 15, 1965.

Before this, Canada used the Red Ensign, which included British elements.

The design process was led by a parliamentary committee, and the final design was created by George F.G. Stanley and John Matheson.

The maple leaf had been a national symbol for many years, appearing on military uniforms and official emblems.

The first official flag-raising ceremony took place on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
