Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended his campaign to respond to the latest tariff announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Carney is now back in Ottawa.

Trump announced on Wednesday that there will be a 25 percent tariff with respect to goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on April 3, for automobiles made outside the United States.

Canada has seven automobile assembly plants operated by five major automakers: Stellantis, Ford, GM, Honda, and Toyota.

Canada is currently the 13-largest auto-producing nation in the world, and seventh largest auto exporter by value, producing 1.4 million vehicles and exporting $32 billion worth of vehicles in 2020.
