New Virus Found in Pigs in China Has Pandemic Potential
As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, a new strain of flu has emerged in China.
The new virus is carried by pigs but can be transmitted to humans. It has the potential to mutate quickly and spread from one person to another fairly quickly.
Scientists say that it has the potential to become a pandemic.
Humans have little or no immunity to this new virus.
G4 EA H1N1 is the name of the influenza virus. There is evidence of initial infection having been found in people who work in abattoirs and the swine industry.
It is related to A/H1N1pdm09, the virus responsible for the 2009 swine flu pandemic being a reassortment of an avian virus and two strains of H1N1.
It mainly affects pigs, but two cases have been identified in humans.
