As of New Year's Day, the provincial government proclaimed the new Towns and Local Service Districts Act.

The new legislation increases flexibility for towns to generate tax revenue and provides tools for tax affordability, reduces unnecessary ministerial oversight and red tape, improves clarity and provides additional tools to facilitate economic development, increases readability and the language is gender neutral, and provides towns with broad powers for enacting by-laws.

The new legislation also acknowledges the role of local service districts in providing services to residents and strengthens accountability.

An updated handbook will be distributed in the near future.
