The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is inviting proposals for funding aimed at advancing innovation and technology in the province’s rapidly growing lobster fishery.
Through the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture, the province has launched a Request for Proposals under the Newfoundland and Labrador Lobster Technology and Innovation initiative. The program offers non-repayable contributions of up to $100,000, covering as much as 80 per cent of eligible project costs, depending on the project's risk and technological complexity.
Both commercial and non-commercial applicants are eligible to apply. Proposals must be submitted by May 16, 2025, to lynettepeddle@gov.nl.ca.
The initiative comes as the province’s lobster industry experiences significant growth. Between 2015 and 2024, lobster landings jumped by 263 per cent—from 5.7 million pounds to 20.7 million pounds. During the same period, the landed value surged by 345 per cent, reaching $136.6 million.
To support this momentum, the Provincial Government is prioritizing investments that enhance live handling and storage practices, improve efficiency, and promote sustainability throughout the supply chain.
Eligible activities may include:
Adoption of new technologies or equipment to boost quality and efficiency.
Testing of innovative lobster harvesting and processing tools.
Research and development aimed at improving sustainability.
Efforts related to traceability and eco-certification.
Training and improvements in lobster handling practices.
