Rishi Sunak becomes next UK Prime Minister

Rishi Sunak is the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The 42-year-old has been a Member of Parliament since 2015. He is the first British Prime Minister of colour.

Sunak takes over from Liz Truss who resigned amid a financial and political crisis in the United Kingdom. Truss had a tenure of 50 days, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in the United Kingdom's history.

As the only candidate, Sunak achieved the nomination requirement on Monday and automatically became party leader, without a vote from the party members.

Other contenders were Penny Mordaunt, who withdrew from the race and Boris Johnson who explored a possible candidacy but declined to stand.

Sunak is married to Akshata Murty and they have two daughters.
