Sunday Drive to Wreckhouse

Wreckhouse is not a town but a geographic location known for its wind!

Wreckhouse is located between Cape Ray and St Andrew's in southwestern Newfoundland.

The area is known for its extremely violent southeast winds. Environment and Climate Change Canada even issues a special warning, a Wreckhouse Wind Warning, for the area.

Winds have been strong enough to blow railcars off their tracks.

The area is so famous that the word "Wreckhouse" was added to the Canadian Oxford Dictionary in 2004.

The winds are still a hazard to vehicles on Highway 1 and transport trucks occasionally get blown off the road. Winds have been measured over 200 km/h.

Sunday Drive is a weekly feature that focuses on small to medium communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
