Trudeau says Canada can reach NATO by 2032

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced at the NATO summit that Canada will meet its target of two per cent of its GDP to be allocated to defense spending by 2032.

Trudeau did not specify how Canada would reach that target. Canada has been facing pressure from other NATO members to increase spending to the minimum of two per cent of a member's GDP.

The government is projecting the defence spending to GDP ratio to reach 1.76 per cent in 2029-30.

Canada was a founding member of NATO. NATO is a major contributor to international peace and security and a cornerstone of Canadian security and defence policy.
