Twitter Backtracks on Government-funded Media labels
Twitter has removed the "Government-funded Media" label from the CBC's Twitter account.
The label has been removed from all of the platform's news accounts including the BBC and NPR. It also includes Russian and Chinese state-controlled media.
Twitter did not provide a reason for the change.
Government-funded media is defined by Twitter as "outlets where the government provides some or all of the outlet’s funding and may have varying degrees of government involvement over editorial content."
The Global Task Force for public media called on Twitter to remove the designation.
CBC along with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and Radio New Zealand (RNZ) had the labels applied along with BBC and NPR.
